Amersfoort Aminal Park welcomes endangered zebra foal

Amersfoort Animal Park has welcomed a new resident, and is celebrating the birth of an adorable zebra foal!

New Grévy zebra in Amersfoort zoo

The foal’s mother, a Grévy zebra named Geisa, gave birth during the night of October 12, and zookeepers arrived on Tuesday morning to the delightful sight of mother and baby, both happy and healthy.

The Grévy zebra are native to the drier regions of Kenya and Ethiopia, but the birth of this foal is significant as it belongs to an endangered species. The zebras at the zoo in Amersfoort belong to the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP).

Animal caretaker Annelien Lodder said the foal is drinking well and has started to explore the world of its enclosure, which it shares with giraffes, impalas and East African oryx.

Witness the foal’s first steps

Zoo-keepers do not yet know the sex of the new resident, but hope to find out in the coming days and assign it a name. If you and your family can’t make it to the zoo to see the foal in person, you can check out its shaky first steps in the video below.
