Extension of India’s nationwide coronavirus lockdown sparked chaos in Mumbai

Thousands of migrant workers gathered near a railway station in Mumbai, India on April 14, 2020, hours after the country extended its coronavirus lockdown.The workers were stranded in the city and demanded that they be allowed to travel back to their home districts. Baton-wielding police later charged the crowd. India announced the nationwide lockdown that started on March 25 would be extended until at least May 3. The measure to fight Covid-19 was initially due to end on April 15. India has reported more than 10,300 infections and over 330 deaths from the disease.
